Our Wines

Vinden Estate produces small quantities of premium wine on-site at our Pokolbin, Hunter Valley vineyard and winery from hand-picked grapes using traditional methods; open fermenters, hand plunging and basket press. Our Hunter Valley wines are aged in oak in the case of both Chardonnay and Shiraz.

Our Hunter Valley wines have been critically acclaimed from the first vintage released from our winery and vineyard in 1998.

    Vinden Estate’s 2015 Semillon exemplifies why the Hunter produces the best Semillon in Australia.
    Sourced from the Trevena Vineyard, planted in 1920 on sandy loam soils, these unirrigated vines are situated along what has become known as the golden mile of Semillon on Hermitage Road. A select portion the hand picked grapes were separated to make this wine. A beautiful wine which whilst young is fresh and zesty, full of citris and refreshing acidity, but will reward those with patience to cellar for up to 10 years.

    Vinden Estate’s 2017 Chardonnay is sourced from the Summerville Vineyard in Broke and underwent 100% barrel fermentation in French oak. During the 10 month elevate, bâtonnage was conducted monthly to build complexity, weight and texture. A delicious
    wine with white peach and vanillin overtones, complemented with a beautiful creamy finish. Great drinking any time over the next 5 years.

    Vinden Estate’s 2017 Semillon exemplifies why the Hunter produces some of the best Semillon in the world.

    Sourced from two famous Semillon vineyards. Trevena Vineyard, planted in 1920 on sandy loam soils, these unirrigated vines are situated on Hermitage Road Pokolbin, and Somerset Vineyard, planted in 1969 on sandy clay loam in Pokolbin. Picked in early
    February, the wine shows the character of the old gnarled vines; concentrated citrus fruit, refreshing acidity and delicate minerality. Great early drinking, however patience will be rewarded with cellaring up to 10+ years. 11% alc

    Vinden Estate’s 2017 Verdelho has been sourced from the Travertine vineyard in Belford and continues the high standard set with our earlier releases. This Portuguese variety has found its home in the Hunter Valley. Medium bodied, with ripe tropical fruit, refreshing acidity and a lingering finish. A beautiful wine to be enjoyed with just about anything, or on its own.

    2017 Vinden Headcase Semillon

    Sourced from the Howard family Somerset Vineyard where I once worked, I know this vineyard almost as well as my own. Planted in 1969 over fine sandy loam soils, the fruit was hand picked over two occasions a week apart in early February. The wine shows the character of the old gnarled vines; zesty, citrus fruit, refreshing acidity, balancing minerality with texture. Great early drinking, however patience will be rewarded with cellaring 10+ years. 10.5% alc

    Vinden Estate is one of very few wineries in Australia to produce this rare varietal. Grown on our estate vineyard on red loamy clay, it truly reflects the characteristics of the grape varietal. It is one of the few grapes with red flesh, resulting from a cross in the 1800’s between a Grenache and Petit Bouschet. A dry, fruit forward style, with red berries and ripe fruit on the pallet; picked in early February, the wine has a beautiful crisp, dry finish. There is nothing more refreshing than to drink it on a warm day with a salad Nicoise or some spicy Asian Food. 11% alc

    2017 Sparking Alicante Bouschet

    Vinden Estate is one of very few wineries in Australia to produce this rare varietal. We believe this to be Australia’s first Sparkling Alicante Bouschet. It is one of the few grapes with red flesh, resulting from a cross in the 1800’s between a Grenache and Petit Bouschet. Grown on our estate vineyard on red loamy clay, it truly reflects the characteristics of the grape varietal, a fruit forward style, with red berries and ripe fruit on the pallet. Picked in late January, the wine resultantly has a lovely crisp finish. 10% alc.

    2018 Vinden Headcase Rosé

    This wine was an experimental batch for the 2018 vintage, and was a hell of a lot of fun to make. 10 different ferments were blended together to create a delicious, dry, textual rosé. Fermented in seasoned French oak barrels and given extended lees contact. The final blend is:

    61% Tempranillo, 26% Shiraz & 13% Semillon

    12.5% alc.

  • Vinden Estate 2017 Chardonnay Hunter Valley copy

    2016 Back Block Shiraz

    Vinden Estate’s ‘Back Block’ has been made from hand picked grapes using traditional methods; open fermenters and hand plunging. It is one of those soſt, elegant Hunter reds which will drink beautifully young but will have a capacity to age for some years. The berry fruit has a nice touch of new oak aged in both French and American oak for 15 months. The palate is soſt and well balanced with fine tannins on the finish. 14% alc.

    2016 Basket Press Shiraz

    Sourced from our Estate Vineyard in Pokolbin, planted in 1995 over red, orange clay soil and from the Howard family Somerset Vineyard planted in 1970 on red volcanic clay soils, over weathered limestone in Pokolbin. Made in traditional methods; cold soaked, fermented in open fermenters, hand plunged, basket pressed and aged in French and American oak (20% new). A bold, vibrant Shiraz with lovely tannins and dark fruits. Great drinking any time over the next 10 years. 14% alc.

    2016 Vinden Headcase – Tempranillo – SOLD OUT

    Sourced from Howard family Somerset Vineyard were I once worked, I know this vineyard almost as well as my own. Planted in 2004 on red volcanic clay soils, over weathered limestone in Pokolbin. This wine is my first tempranillo, and certainly
    not for the faint of heart. It is a massive wine; big spicy tannin and bold dark fruits drive the palate. The fruit was cold soaked, wild fermented in open concrete fermenters, hand plunged, basket pressed and aged in French & American oak (25% new) for 10 months. Drink it now or sometime in the next decade as the tannins soſten. 14.5% alc.

    2017 The Vinden Headcase Charmless Man

    Named aſter the Blur Song, ‘Charmless Man’, this wine was an experimental batch for the 2017 vintage, playing with two varieties, which are not synonymous for the Hunter Valley; Pinot Noir and Alicante Bouschet. The pinot noir was wild fermented and spent 2 weeks on skins, 10% whole bunch, 40% whole berry and the remainder was crushed. The Alicante Bouschet was wild fermented on skins for 2 weeks, 50% whole bunch and 50% whole berry. The wines were settled and blended before èlevage in seasoned French oak Hogsheads. The final blend is 60% pinot noir and 40% Alicante Bouschet. This funky little number is light, fun and delicious. Cheers! 13% alc.

    2017 Vinden Headcase – Nouveau Shiraz

    This wine was inspired by a trip to Beaujolais and the legendary Shiraz O’Shea made up on the Old Hill. Sourced from the Howard family Somerset Vineyard were I once worked; I know this vineyard almost as well as my own. This dry grown block was planted in 1966 on red volcanic clay soils, over weathered limestone in Pokolbin. Picked in Mid February, the age and character of the old vines shine through in this light, crisp style of Shiraz. Cold soaked, wild fermented (10% whole bunch, 50% whole berry) in open concrete fermenters, hand plunged basket pressed and aged in seasoned French oak. Enjoy it now or on a hot summers day serve it chilled with a straw. Cheers! 13% alc.
