Our History

In 1990, Guy and Sandra Vinden purchased 25 acres of land on Gillards Road, Pokolbin, in the Hunter Valley winemaking region.

Soil tests determined that the rich, heavy red clay Hunter Valley soil was ideal for the production of red grapes.

We conducted numerous soil preparation processes for our Pokolbin vineyard including deep ripping, adding gypsum to break up the clay and planting cover cops to balance the soil naturally.

We planted the vineyard trestles and tended the vines for three years before our first harvest in 1998.

Using hand picked grapes, the traditional methods of open concrete fermenters, hand plunging and a basket press, Vinden Estate Wines produces small quantities of premium wines in our onsite Hunter Valley winery.

Our range of wines includes the Hunter Valley’s only Alicante Bouschet (a light dry rosé), Sparkling Alicante Bouschet, Semillon, SSB, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Merlot, Basket Press Shiraz and Late Harvest Semillon.

Our children Angus, Gabby and Ben have been a constant presence at the Hunter Valley vineyard since their early childhood years. They have increased their involvement in the business as they have become older, ensuring Vinden Estate Wines maintains its unique standing as a family-owned, boutique Hunter Valley vineyard.

Angus our eldest, combined with Dan Binet have taken over the wine making from Guy in the past few years, aiming to produce wines of unique regionality reflecting the terroir of the Hunter Valley. Sourcing grapes from 3 vineyards; our own Estate Vineyard where we grow Alicante Bouschet, Shiraz and Merlot; Somerset Vineyard for Semillon, Verdelho, Chardonnay and Shiraz and Travena Vineyard for Semillon.

We are excited about the future, for what every vintage brings and where are children will lead the business in the coming generation.
